As a mother, there are moments in life that test the very core of your being—moments that push you beyond the limits of what you thought possible. For me, those moments began when my son Jack suffered multiple strokes at age 8. The fear, uncertainty, and heartache were overwhelming, but so too was the love and determination that rose within me to ensure Jack could still have a life filled with joy, opportunity, and the simple pleasure of play.
The Start of Can Play
When Jack’s strokes initially left him with significant challenges, the world of recreational activities and sports seemed to close its doors on us. All Jack wanted was to play in sports just like his big brother. Most programs weren’t equipped to handle a child with Jack’s needs. The very spaces meant to provide joy and growth were often the ones that felt the most isolating. It was in these difficult moments that the seed for Can Play was planted.
I envisioned a place where every child, regardless of their physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges, could experience the joy of play. A place where barriers didn’t exist, and where every child was seen, valued, and included. From this vision, Can Play was born—an organization dedicated to providing adapted recreational opportunities to children like Jack, who live with physical, cognitive, and emotional barriers.
Jack’s Journey with Can Play
Yesterday, today, and going forward, Can Play has been a pivotal part of Jack’s life. From the early days when we started our programs, I witnessed how the power of play transformed him. The programs not only helped Jack rebuild his strength and coordination but also gave him a sense of belonging and confidence. Jack was able to interact with his peers in a supportive environment that celebrated his abilities, not his limitations.
As he grew older, Jack’s involvement with Can Play evolved. He moved from being a participant in our young adult program to now assisting me with coaching. Jack’s journey from a child facing insurmountable odds to a young adult who now helps others navigate their own challenges is nothing short of inspirational.
Looking Ahead:
Going forward, I see Jack’s role with Can Play continuing to grow. His experiences have given him a unique perspective and the ability to connect with others who are on similar journeys. As a coach, he’s not just teaching skills; he’s sharing hope, resilience, and the belief that anything is possible.
The journey that started with Jack’s strokes has come full circle. What began as a way to ensure my son could play has grown into a community where countless children and their families find support, inclusion, and joy. Together, we will continue to advocate for and support the inclusion of all children in play, because every child deserves the chance to shine.
